St Thérèse being honoured during
the UNESCO 2022 -2023 Anniversaries Biennial
The United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) through its Anniversaries Biennial marks historical events and recognises eminent people whose lives are celebrated by Member States.
The 2022 - 2023 Programme honours St Thérèse during the 150th anniversary of her birth which takes place in January 2023.
The period 2022 - 2023 also covers the centenary of the Beatification of St Thérèse (April 2023) and the bicentenary of the birth of her father St Louis Martin (August 1823), with the centenary of her Canonisation coming up in 2025.
The proposal that UNESCO would include St Thérèse in the 2022 - 2023 Anniversaries Programme was initially made by the Sanctuary of Lisieux. The candidacy was presented by France with the support of Belgium and Italy and agreed by UNESCO in late 2021.
